SEO Case Study #1 – Art of Behavior

It’s week four of my internship, and I’m starting to learn a whole lot of Search Engine Optimization strategies, tactics and techniques fairly quickly.  I thought it would be a good idea to attempt to apply the things I am learning while I am interning. Please allow me to introduce Meaghan Gosling and her Web site www.artofbehavior.com.

Art of Behavior is a Web site I created a couple of years ago, for a friend of mine who teaches autistic children.  The site is 100% static HTML, and has absolutely zero SEO.  No links besides the menu in the header, no title or alt tags, no site map, no anything.  Currently the site gets an average of 5 visitors a month.  None of her traffic is currently coming from search engines.

It is my goal to draw as much traffic to this site as possible, using the things I am learning from SEO guru Everett Sizemore.  Currently I have gathered a list of keywords, and some competitor information.  I gathered keywords, using the method I described in an earlier post about building a relevant keyword list, and sent them to Meaghan for approval.  I created a short list of target terms that I would like to try to rank for.  I also asked Meaghan to choose a handful of terms from the list that most closely described what it is she actually does.

As of right now, I have done nothing to the site itself.  I am currently in class three nights a week, interning four days a week, and I have some freelance webdev jobs that I am working on… Life is a bit hectic, and free time is scarce.  As you can see, there are things in this blog itself that could use some super-quick SEO treatment.

Here’s an outline of some of the things I would like to do to the site, right out of the gate.

  • Switch the site from plain HTML to Wordpress.
  • Rewrite all of the Web site copy for relevancy, and to include targeted keywords.
  • Add a blog
  • Look for, and exploit link-building opportunities.

There are other projects that I have been working on that I will be tweaking for SEO.  Art of Behavior will be my priority side-project for the time being.  I would really like to document another SEO case study or two (hence “SEO Case Study #1), however I don’t know if I will have the time and gumption to document each study as diligently as I plan to do for this one.

Please check back from time to time to see how things are going.  You can also add my Beginning SEO RSS feed to your handy RSS reader.  I would also love for you to follow me on Twitter.  If you are a SEO, or Web professional in any regard, and you have any questions, advice or any comments what so ever please, please leave me a comment or two.  I would be very greatful for any words you may have.

UPDATE: Unfortunately ArtOfBehavior.com has lost interest in having a Web site developed at this time.
